LAMPHEY II v FISHGUARD II 30/8/08 Lamphey II saved their best performance of the season for this last game against an undefeated Fishguard side who were looking for a win to get promoted. However the Stags turned the form book on its head with a compelling victory which had much to do with the youth players in the side. Fishguard won the toss and elected to bat and it can only be assumed that they were looking for maximum points from this encounter to force promotion. However any notions of them achieving the 150 for maximum batting points never looked likely. With the Stags having nothing to play for other than pride, skipper Skeels took the option to open the bowling with a 12 and 15 year old, both of whom played beyond their age to cause the opening Fishguard batsmen problems. Such is the importance of line and length it was no surprise when Scott Brunton caused the breakthrough by bowling the visiting opener for 1. With Brunton being replaced by 15 year old Guisseppe Trimarco the 2nd wicket fell in the 10th over with 24 on the board, Forth catching Kurtz for 15. The next wicket to fall came with the score on 42 as veteran Couzens was run out by Johnson off Trimarco for 17, 5 runs later and Trimarco picked up his second wicket of the afternoon bowling O'Connor for 2. 12 runs were added to the visitors score before Trimarco snapped up his third of the afternoon bowling Dave Pearce for 10. With James Skeels bowling 6 overs for 14 runs, he was then replaced by Skipper Skeels who bowled his dibbly dobblies to devastating effect and in tandem with Trimarco worked their way through the tail. Trimarco adding a fourth wicket courtesy of a Llewellyn catch to finish with impressive figures of 4 for 25 and Skeels, miserly as ever, chipped in with 4 for 14 as Fishguard were skittled out for 73 off 22.3 overs. With the Stags requiring 74 to win off 57 overs time was never going to be a problem. Guisseppe TriMarco and Robert Mathias opened the batting and took the score to 13 before Trimarco holed out to mid off for 9, this after being struck on the helmet earlier in the over. Nic Johnson joined Mathias at the crease and the pair set about the Fishguard bowling with great aplomb. With only 11 overs gone it was left to Mathias to hit the winning runs as he finished on 35 not out and Johnson was undefeated on 26. Both players hitting one six, the best being a sweetly timed 6 from Johnson into the field. For the visitors Wade took the only wicket to fall and Kurtz although expensive, going for 31 off 6, looked to be a promising bowler in the making. Season over and the 2nds have their second win of the season - 2 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats in a difficult season but a useful one none the less with youngsters like Skeels (15), Guisseppe (15) and Luca (13) Trimarco, Gethin Llewellyn (15) and Scott Brunton (12) all making an impact. 2009 could be an interesting season if they all continue to improve. Star Man - Guisseppe Trimarco - a great spell of bowling finishing with 4 for 25 and a quickfire 9 runs with the bat. Archived Games - May June July August 2007 season |
